Connecting the app to StagingPro

Introduction

Communication between team members is vital in any development project, and with teams working remotely and across different time zones, keeping in touch is more important than ever. StagingPro has the native ability to send notifications to Slack (and other channels) each time a deployment event occurs.

Setting up the Slack channel

This document assumes that you already have Slack installed in your organization. If you need assistance in downloading and installing Slack, you will find detailed instructions here.

Step 1: Click on the “…” next to the “Channels” menu item.

Step 2: Select “Create a channel” from the popup menu

Step 3: Give your channel a unique name and click “Create”

Step 4: If everybody in your organization is going to have access to the StagingPro notifications then you can leave the default “Add all members of [your Slack name]” and click the “Add” button. Alternatively, type the user names of each individual you would like to be part of this channel and click “Add”

The new channel has been created and you will see it displayed in the left-hand menu.

Creating the app

Before you can link StagingPro to Slack we first need to create a connector (or webhook) that listens for messages coming in. To do this we need to create an app.

Step 1: From a new browser window go to api.slack.com

Step 2: Click the “Create an app” button

Step 3: When the Create an app window appears, select “From scratch”

Step 4: Give your app a useful name and use the dropdown menu to choose your company's Slack workspace. IMPORTANT: If nothing is displayed in the workspace dropdown, you must go back to api.slack.com and log into Slack.

Step 5: Click on “Create App”

Step 6: Under “Add features and functionality” select “Incoming Webhooks”
